VoIP internally is sometimes a benefit and sometimes a headache. Trying to rely on your data network to run your voice traffic and data can be dangerous. If your network goes down so does your telephones. If you upgrade your switches to newer Gigabit switches that can separate the voice and data traffic this will help. However, if your data network switch goes down, so will your phones.
When VoIP makes the most sense is usually on a new buildout when a company moves or builds a new building. Since internal VoIP can utilize one Ethernet cable to support the computer and the VoIP phones, this could save thousands of dollars on the new CAT 5e cabling that is needed.

Introducing....Me
My name is Rick Westfall and I am a Sales Manager at a telecommunication company in Houston, Texas. I am currently attending Lone Star Community College and this is my first blog. I have been in telecom sales of phone systems for around 24 years. Last year I married my girlfriend of 7 years and could not be any happier. She has helped me put two kids through high school and works by me every day.
What is VoIP
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and often refers to a telephone voice application using data from your bandwidth to communicate. There are many definitions associated with VoIP, depending who you are talking, to or what you are referring to. For example, if you are referring to an internal telephony network connected to your data network and sharing one cable for the phone and computer, this is internal VoIP. Internet Service Providers will refer to VoIP on the lines delivered into your phone system via a router that turns the signal back to a standard voice service for traditional type phone systems. VoIP has become a marketing term that is used for many things to help drive the product, or service, a company is providing.
